Brighton-Allston is first settled by Europeans.
June 30, 1630
Richard Saltonstall leads a group that lands near today’s Gerry’s Landing in Cambridge. Originally part of Watertown ( incorporated on September 17, 1630), it becomes part of Cambridge in 1634,* and then an independent town in (1806-MSS) 180.7,* and is annexed by Boston in 1874.* The area is initially an area of large farms and horticultural experiments. then a streetcar suburb and an area of large blocks of apartment in the late 19th century. Universities and hospital expand here in the 20th century and Allston is separated from the rest of the community by construction of the Massachusetts Turnpike Extension in 1965.*
